Plenty of people don't know how hard it is to be a new mom, it could make a good reality show People who have never had a child seem to think that being a new mother is this marvelous, constantly happy time in a women's life. There exists some truth to that, but new mothers do not always feel happy, and many of them get the ‘baby blues" and a few have postpartum depression.

The 'baby blues' will effect half of women who give birth. Some women think they they may be the only one experiencing these feelings and feel like bad mothers, and that's simply not true. Many women can feel restless, impatient, anxious and irritable following having a baby. You've spent the past nine months growing a new life in you, not surprisingly you likely will feel a bit drained and exhausted. Being pregnant and giving birth are very emotional times, therefore it is not really a surprise you'd feel emotionally drained after giving birth.

For most women the "baby blues' symptoms leave as fast as they came. But for 10% of mothers these symptoms never leave and they will need help. The inability to focus, fatigue, severe emotional highs and lows, sadness, no interest or excessive interest in the baby, loss in appetite, and scared of hurting the baby are very common symptoms of postpartum depression. Not everyone with postpartum will feel all of these symptoms everyday. What they do feel each day is guilt, shame and so they tend to become isolated.


It saddens me to say that we don't know yet what causes post partum depression. Factors like lack of sleep, isolation after the baby is born, stress and hormones that affect the brains chemistry are what some researchers think could potentially cause postpartum depression. The idealic picture on motherhood being this happy joyful thing is not complete. Even though it is all that, it is also the most difficult most frustrating and sometimes thankless job you will ever do. Unfortunately some women become extremely depressed when all of these things happen after a baby is born.

It's not always easy for you to spot postpartum depression in your life. You might think you feel down because you are working extremely hard and sleeping and showers aren't priorities. You need to pay attention to friends and family that are telling you that they are concerned about you. Call your doctor immediately when you are seeing the symptoms in your life. There are many organizations out there that can help, however you still need to see your personal doctor. PostPartum depression happens to plenty of moms, so leave the guilt and shame feelings behind. You may be feeling better soon, the support from both your doctor and friends will have you feeling normal once more.


If you are experiencing any of these signs or symptoms for a long period of time, it isn't the 'baby blues'. but postpartum depression and you need to get hold of your physician. You need to stay healthy for your new little baby.
